Over the years, we have had many couples come to us for their engagement and wedding jewelry who are second-, third,- and even fourth-generation customers. It’s always a thrill for us to be part of a continuing family tradition!
Jewelry from Plante’s became part of an amazing family story when our third-generation customer, Alex, got engaged to his fiancee, Ben. They were living in Thailand, and came to see us when they were visiting Alex’s parents in Rhode Island.
Alex had some diamonds and rubies that had come from his grandmother—in fact, the rubies were from a ring that was purchased at Plante Jewelers many years ago. With the help of our designer, Pam, the couple created two unique pieces of jewelry for Ben to wear at her wedding: a stunning pair of ruby and diamond earrings and a custom-designed engagement ring with diamonds and rubies set in platinum.
Ben and Alex were actually only in our store twice: once while visiting family, and again when they picked up the jewelry. All of the design details were created and managed in emails across continents, traveling between Thailand and Swansea.
Recently, Alex’s family traveled to Thailand for the engagement ceremony and wedding. They surprised us by sending this beautiful video of the engagement ceremony!
Their story is so romantic and unique— and we have to admit, our hearts beat a little more quickly when we saw the Plante Jewelers boxes!
The mother of the groom describes the ceremony:
Alex’s “clan”— his family and friends— proceeded with gifts to the house where the bride was hidden, bringing gold, jewelry, and food (two pig’s legs and fruit). He had to do things they asked, such as sing, dance, and pay "bribes" (the red envelopes of money) to get into the house.
When we entered the main room, the gifts were displayed in the front. My husband asked that our son be allowed to marry their daughter. Seeing that he could provide for her, Alex then went to find her and bring her back.
The two families had a Chinese tea ceremony where they honored their elders. Later, they had refreshments. The next day, the couple was married in Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok.
What a wonderful story and a beautiful couple!
